+ 3 - 1 | § Me on Lugradio!

I've recently gotten my email read on my favorite Linux podcast, Lugradio! In the email, I gave them a hard time about not including Debian (my distro of choice) in their Linux distro comparison. I made a stupid point about people doing things the "hard" way, but I guess it got the email read on the show. Oh well, if that's what it takes to make it on the show, I'm happy to do it! I've created a small mp3 of the segment, which you can check out here. Also, you can check out the rest of this post to see the email I sent them: (more)

+ 2 - 2 | § darkslayer@thebackburner

How things have changed! Back in the day (early college when I had no friends), I used to work on a website called the backburner. It was a site dedicated to computer games and the people who played them. It was a totally dorky site that focused mainly on games called first person shooters. The most popluar game at the time was (and still is) Counter-Strike. We wrote down news and posted new maps for the game. I even made a few maps of my own. While some people may have thought this was an extreme waste of time, it did result in me learning how to make webpages pretty well, along with 3d design programs and php for scripting. So in the end, I guess it was a good thing... after I got burned out on the whole gaming "scene," I started looking for another way to waste my free time.... enter open source software, which I am still obsessed with today! In case you're interested, you can checkout archived versions of the site using archive.org's wayback machine:

I like this IM buddy icon:

... I should, because I made it.

+ 3 - 1 | § Audioscrobbling

I've recently come across a site called audioscrobbler. Its a site that collects info about all the mp3 files that you play on your computer. It's pretty cool to see what songs people are playing, and which ones are the most popular. Once you register for an account, you get a personalized page that your friends can use to see what you've been listening to. The site works by using a plugin that works with your favorite player. The plugin grabs some basic info about the songs you are listening to, and automatically uploads that info to the main website. After that, it shows up on your personal page! You can also browse through the most popluar songs and artists for everyone using the site. Pretty cool stuff!

+ 2 - 2 | § Star Wars Episode III

Like millions of other geeks across the country, I went to see the new Star Wars movie tonight. Here are my impressions... I thought it was a good movie, not as great as some initial reviews made it out to be. The fighting sequences were really cool and the story progressed pretty well. I guess that it should, because this movie is exactly what the previous 2 were trying to set up. George Lucas finally got to tell the story he's been wanting to tell since the Return of the Jedi, and it shows... except in the scenes between Anakin (Hayden Christensen.. who cares.) and Padmé (Natalie Portman). Suzanne thought that they were believable, but I just never bought into those two characters having feelings for each other. Anakin was pretty average as an actor, but he got his story across... The same can be said for Padmé, but I think its reasonable to expect a little bit more from Natalie Portman. Its a shame that she didn't do a better job... there was a big opportunity for an emotional role there. On the positive side, Ewan McGregor played Obi-Wan Kenobi brilliantly, and carried the film in my opinion (along with Yoda, but Yoda was totally computer generated...). Samuel Jackson played his role very well and the guy that played Palpatine also impressed me.

There were definitely some choice scenes, my favorite ones being all of the ones with Yoda in them, the one where Samuel tries to lay the smack down on Palpatine, and the final battles between Anakin and Obi-wan and Yoda and Palpatine. It was also really cool to see the story come full circle, with Anakin and Padmé's twins being separated and sent away to Tatooine and Alderran. Too bad the movie series is over, but at least we'll have the eventual super expanded special editions of episodes 1-3 to look forward to in a few years... On a final note, the soundtrack was brilliant once again, and I'm listening to it now, while I write this entry.

Final grade for the movie: A-

+ 1 - 1 | § PS3 vs Xbox 360 vs N-Revolution

I found this comment interesting while reading about the playstation 3 and xbox 360. Looks like we're going to have another lop-sided technical battle in the video game console world... this time with the ps3 being way better. Take that Mr. Gates!

Update: The Nintendo Revolution looks pretty exciting too... It'll be interesting to see which game console become the most popluar!

+ 2 - 0 | § Time Travel Paper

I've decided to post a paper I wrote on time travel for my philosophy of physics class on the site. Take a look if you're at all interested. Feel free to make fun of my horrible writing...

+ 3 - 0 | § Foosball Table.

For some reason, Suzanne and I decided to buy a foosball table.

Update: I also have to give the store where we got the table some props... they sold the table to us at a great price (600) AND they run a linux distro called Knoppix on their store computers! Rock!

+ 2 - 0 | § Motorola

Some initial thoughts on my new job...
It's much more fast paced. There is a lot of information going around, and you're expected to be able to process it all (not that I can't, but its just a big change from my previous job). Also, I really like working with cutting edge technology. Its cool to be able to see the new cell phones that are coming out before anyone else. I'm really excited by the new features that we're working on. I think that they'll change the way people use their phones. (more)

+ 1 - 1 | § NIN Fan Remixes!

On April 15th, 2005, Trent Reznor released the garageband source file for his new single "the hand that feeds"...
here.

+ 1 - 1 | § New Family Guy

Today is May 1st and as promised, Fox aired the first new episode of Family Guy!. The episode was called "North by North Quahog" and it was about Peter and Louis stopping Mel Gibson from making the "Passion of the Christ 2" and Stewie and Brian (dog) acting as parental figures for Meg and Chris. I have to say that the show hasn't skipped a beat, and is still funny as hell! I liked that there were alot of really cool references... Suzanne and I were cracking up alot. We also watched the Simpsons before Family Guy, and the new American Dad after, and we weren't laughing nearly as much during them. I hope Fox concentrates on making Family Guy awesome, and stops wasting time on making other cartoons... American Dad does have some potential if there is a cross-over between them and Family Guy....... What if they MERGED THE TWO SHOWS!?!?!?!
