The Illini lost, 54 - 52, and are now out of the 2007 NCAA Basketball tournament. If you ask me, the score does not reflect what happened during the game. The first half was pretty competitive and I think that the Illini were winning be a good margin. As was true during the regular season, the Illini couldn't hold off a determined team during the 2nd half.

At the very beginning of the 2nd half it still looked like the Illini could hold out and make it to the second round (where coach Bruce Webber would have a big opportunity to play against the team he used to coach - the Southern Illinois Salukis). However, the big turning point came when VT started a full court press. The in-experienced Illini ballhandlers couldn't "handle" the pressure and turned the ball over time and time again. Some people expected an upset because of the Illini defense, and I'm happy to say that they played well in that aspect... but there is no excuse for not being able to get out of a full court press. That's just basic basketball...

Another thing that stood out, was the lack of agressiveness on the offensive side of the ball. If the Illini did get out of the backcourt, they slowed down the game and waited the full 35 seconds to score - even if there was an easy opportunity earlier! They didn't play that way in the first half, and as a result they built up a big lead... but in the second half it seemed as if Coach Webber told the guys - I don't care if you score, just eat as much time as you can off the clock with each possession. That would have worked for a team with a great point guard (like the Illini had the past few years), but it failed miserably with a team that kept turning the ball over on stupid mistakes.

Oh well, maybe we'll get a good PG next year or some of the freshmen/sophomores will step up. I guess now I'll be rooting for the rest of the Big 10 teams in the tournament and for the other big Illinois team: the Salukis! At least my brackets are still doing pretty well :)

My 2 week long business trip to Denmark is finally over. To add insult to injury, my luggage was lost on the way home... It's good that I went since it got some aspects of the project on track, but next time I'll try really hard to get everything done in one week! One good thing about the trip was that I did get to spend some time in Copenhagen. Check out my flickr pictures for a view of what I saw during the trip :)
